Why do my speakers shut off?
[Question]
So I have 2 12in subs, and after playing them for awhile while driving, they just cut off. Any ideas on why this happens? My thought is maybe the amp is overheating or something. Ive had the speakers for about 2 yrs, the amp for about a year. This is the 2nd time thats happened in 3 months. When i let the car rest for a couple hours, and i get back in it comes back on. Any ideas?
[All Answers]
yes you are obviously playing louder than your cars electronic system can handle so you either need a higher watt amplifier or simply don't play them as loud
I agree even playing the subs and amp at there RMS eventually after a few hours they will eventually shut off because the amp needs a break.
I just want to say I am glad to hear you have taken care of your system and had them for a good while.
It sounds as if the amps thermal protection circuitry is malfunctioning. Having it repaired should do the trick.

i need help on wiring a toggle switch to turn on my amp. the remote turn on relay doesnt work.?
[Question]
today when i pulled in my driveway, i noticed my amp was still on after i turned the key off. i checked it out and have come to the conclusion that the rem. turn on circut is fried. i disconnected the rem wire and left the power and ground hooked up, and it still stayed on. its a brand new amp and i dont want to spend the money on a new one. how can i wire a toggle switch to interrupt the power supply to it? its 8 gauge wiring. or if a toggle switch isnt the best option, i am open to suggestions.
[All Answers]
You could put a simple on/off toggle on your main power cable. Make sure you get a good switch that is rated for the amount of juice you are using. A 30amp on/off toggle should do the trick.
The best way to deal with electricity is to take away the ground! It's safer, and much less complicated, to just break the ground circuit. All electronic devices require a ground and power lead. If you break in the ground wire and place a switch in series to it you can manually turn it on and off.
Jason, HUH?!?!?!?
It makes no difference which you break, power or ground.
Your best bet is to have the amp repaired. Otherwise no ordinary toggle switch will do. You'll need a heavy duty battery disconnect switch - http://www.cyber-bridge-marine.com/battery-switches.html
It will need to be higher in amperage rating than the total fuses on the amplifier.

how to fix radio in buick riviera '91?
[Question]
My radio is acting weird. Sometimes it's on and i can use it sometimes not. when i start the engine it should display the time (clock is there) where the radio has its display - so i already know if it's gonna work because if the time is on that means the radio will work too but sometimes it's just completely black/blank/ no display then i cannot also turn on the radio. Also - sometimes it's on so i turn it on and then it will go off suddenly and the display will go black again and i can't use it again. It's like that on and off - randomly... Any ideas what could be the problem and how could i fix it?
Thanks a lot

Sounds like you have a bad Neg. Ground lead ( black wire ) ! Pull the radio out, and check it !
its probably just bad/old wiring where it connects. or maybe its in the fuses
It sounds like you or a boyfriend are going to have to remove the radio from the car and check the wired connect behind the unit. Its possible before you owned the vehicle someone had removed the unit and cut the wires to put in a aftermarket unit and didnt do a good splice when reconnecting the stock unit.
Or if this isnt the case then either the radio is having problems or the electrical wiring in your vehicle is bad ( but that is a worst case scenario).
I didnt see any do it yourself radio removal for a Buick riviera but I would assume that there are clips that hold on the panel that surround the radio.
I would recommend going to your local radio shop unless you consider yourself at least a novice at automotive car repair or have a local junk yard near where you live to get replacement parts for your car incase you break something.

Alpine Type R 12 Ported Specs Please?
[Question]
I have one alpine type r 12 and want to build a ported box. But I need the materials to do it and the specs. Somebody with experience please give me the list of materials i'll need and the specs for a ported box. I prefer it to be tuned to 36Hz.

You'll need to make it out of 3/4" MDF and use wood glue to put it together. You should also use either screws or brad nails for assembly. I recommend a silicone sealant for sealing the edges as well.
As for the specs, what type of sound are you looking for? Are you looking for loudness, sound quality, a mix of both? I would only recommend tuning to 36Hz if you are looking for loudness. If you want a mix of sound quality and loudness then make an enclosure that is around 2 cubic foot @ 32Hz. If you want something more for loudness then make it 2 cubic foot @ 36Hz.
Good Luck!!!
MD is correct... The MOST important part of a subwoofer is its box...
