i would get another kicker. but get a 15 inch. and make sure u get a 2ohm amp also. or you could get a 4 ohm kicker with a 2 ohm amp. that will sound really nice.

Theres no way i would pay 120 dollars for a box, i got mine at a local flea market for just 10 dollars. i know not a great place and all but its a cash saver.

The quality of the box is very good. If you are not too satisfied with the sound, you can add foam similar to that used to ship items. You should use a big piece of foam and place it inside the box then mount the subwoofer.

is my car amp screwed?

okay so this evening i had plans on making a box for my subs, but as always i wanted some tunes. so i go to turn on my system but for some strange reason my amp didnt kick on. so i went straight to my battery to check for a blown fuse. but it wasnt. so i went to check on my amp confused. i looked at it no power at all, nothing. so i checked my ground to find it lose. so i took the bolt off of it which is the bolt hold my seatbelt to the chasis. when i did this still nothing with the amp. then when i pressed the ground back to the chasis it spark a little but no fuses blown or anything but then it started smoking. freaked me out so i took it off the chasis. then trying to get power again, nothing... so i decided to ground it under my seat, and after doing this it kicked on and started playing. but seconds after blew a fuse on the amp and then smoked again. fuse after fuse was blown and now here i sit in complete confusion not knowing what the hell happened. help?
i have 4 guage power wire, which is correct for the amp. just took the top off of it and it seems like the ground plate for it (the 4 metal pieces bolted to the side of the amps inside) is burnt. bu only one is damaged. maybe i can save it.

Chances are the amp is fried. Before you buy a new one you should turn all of the amp settings to the lowest possible setting and try turning the amp on. If the amp continues to blow the fuse you can try using a thicker power cable.

From what I know, as long as it is not visible to people outside of the vehicle it is fine. Blue light is typically restricted only to police (which is why you are probably asking), but as long as it is something only you can see, cause its aesthetic to you, then it is probably ok.

personally i would stick with a 2 channel. mono amps would require you to hook them both to a single channel which most likely isn'tt all that safe, but can be done. if you decide to go for it, just put both speaker wire to the positive and neg. post on the amp. simple

simple, wire the two subs in parallel. i mean hook both of the positives of the subs together and hook up to the positive output on your amp and hook both of the negatives of the subs together and hook that up to the negative terminal on your amp. This will give you the maximum output and the most volume for that set up.

My mum's WRX had I think 120dB with two Focal speakers in the front, two Eclipse speakers in the back, and a Rockford PUNCH sub in the boot, so I'd say within the 100-120dB for the average 4-speaker + sub setup. Mind you the setup in the Rex could go louder. It all depends on what your speakers are capable of and how much they'll take before they blow up.

Sure. It's a typical practice that a mono signal is derived from the left channel of the stereo. You can use an RCA "Y cable to split the signal to the mono amp.



It's also typical practice to use a heavy guage wire from the battery (fuse no more than 18" from battery w/same rating as the sum of ALL fuses on both amps) to a distrobution block where two smaller guage wires run to each amp for power.



Ground both amps to the same location to prevent ground loops and keep ground wires as short as possible. The ground wires should be the same size as the power wires to each amp.

oh man. i had the same thing happen. you belive it or not killed your subs not your amp.what happend to me was i bought a new amp and unplugged my old amp and just hooked up my amp to test it out and when i pulled the neg and pos out they touched and it made a big pop noise sparked and then i turned my car back on and hooked it up to my new amp hooked my subs up to it and they just made a FUMP noise and would not reproduce bass. sorry man

You ignored the the #1 rule - Disconnect ONE wire from the battery before you do ANY wiring in the car. Make the battery connection the LAST connection made AFTER you've checked everything.

I bought an FM transmitter. Target has a good one for 89.00 by Belkin. You plug it into the cigarette lighter and plug in the IPOD and them tune your radio to the same station number and it plays. Works great.

the cheapest way to do this is a adaptor that you could get from most any electronic store. you could also buy a new deck that had a usb port or audio in jack but that will be more expensive. As for looking at the back of the deck that's in there now... im not familiar with your 240sx but im guessing there is plastic around it that can pop of but be carefull not to break off any pieces on the inside then its just a few screws and its out. if its a stock deck im pretty sure it doesnt have a place for the ipod to plug in. i would say get a adaptor unless your willing to spend alot more money.

First: look at the brand name of the deck (stereo) and go online and download the owerers manual and see if the deck has a AUX option

if it dosnt then your SOL on your attempt.



Second: go to best buy or somewhere that does car audio and ask them if they have a key to pull the deck. more than likly they will either give you the key which is a little piece of metal. or they will just pul it for you.



Third: you will need to find the input for the deckand plug in your ipod to the other end.



Fourth: select the AUX option, replace deck into your dash, enjoy

Based on the specifications from each of the manufacturer's website and from past experience, I would recommend the HK159XC. The MA Audio has double the wattage of the MTX sub, but for sensitivity (which is very important in the sub's efficiency) the 5500 supercedes the MA Audio sub. Either sub will do you justice, and of course it also depends on the amp. A great sub can be pissed down the drain by an inefficient amplifier. Don't forget about the enclosure design, too. I think your best bet would be the HK159XC; it will deliver the most bang for the buck.

if you have 2 at 4ohm DVC, that means you will need 2000W rms of power, which means you will need 1 amp that does 2000W rms

although that amp is good it will under power both subs by 500W rms, so therefore i tell you, get the dual 2ohm type x and get 2 pdx1000's and wire each in parallel to achieve 1 ohm loads on both to power each sub up to 1000W rms

i would reccomend going to aomewhere like auto zone and finding a general repair book on your car

i think the brand is HAYNES youll just have to find like 95-00 corolla. itll be like $15 but itll really help alot for when you have to take the door pannel off to get to the speakers.

but yeah it really dosnt matter with speakers your gennerally just fine with whatever. i just replaced all 4 speakers in my car. i put 2 6x9 pioneers in the back and 2 5.25 fusion speakers in the doors and it sounds pretty damn good. especially with my subs in the trunk

subwoofer box acts like a drum, if you only beat on a piece leather you won't get any sound at all but when stretched over something hollow you hear a beat. the air in the box vibrates from the subs then the box acts like a drum. OHMS are a way of measuring the strength of subwoofers, tweeters are basically for treble (higher pitched sounds in music) I may be wrong so you may want to do other research, but I tried to help

How you load an amp determines the amount of power out.



There is a trade off though, the lower the impedance (ohms) the more power is pushed as well as higher distortion and more heat is generated. The excessive heat will shorten the life of the amp.



For best overall performance, it's far better to get a higher powered amp and load it with 4 ohms than a lower powered amp and force it to push more power with a lower impedance (2 or less ohms) load.

You have to have an enclosure for a sub. If it is in open air, it will produce no bass. It is called cancellation, which is the front sound waves meeting the rear sound waves. There are subs made for free-air, or open air, mounting, but you have to mount them to a baffle, or piece of wood sheeting, then mount that in the trunk. That setup uses the trunk as the enclosure.

Ohms is the impedence the sub (or any speaker) presents to the amp (HU internal or an external amp). The lower the ohm (2-ohm vs 4-ohm) the less resistance, and the more power the amp produces. That is why you will see an amp rated at, say, 100 watts x 2 @ 4-ohms and 150 watts RMS x 2 @ 2-ohms.

Subwoofers play sub bass frequencies, generally 50 Hz and lower. Then woofers; midbass; midrange; and tweeters.



Pioneer has that gimmick of "super tweeters" on a 4-way. That is a marketing ploy. A good 2-way is all that is needed. A 2-way has a woofer cone and a tweeter. A 3-way has a woofer cone, a midrange driver, and a tweeter- all in one housing. 6x9 3-ways are an example.

As far as I know, "XM Ready" means that your head is ready to equipped with a receiver that will interface with the head itself, rather than being a separate unit. I'm pretty sure you have to buy a receiver rather than just activating XM service.

Heres the setup i have 2 memphis 15's with a kenwood 1800w amp, my problem is i wired the car myself which my buddie who works at an audio store said it looked correct ive had it play music but when i turn it up not loud but a little the fuse in the disturber box by the battery blows so i upgraded a bigger fuse "100amp" but it is still blowing..i think the problem is that i have 2 gauge wire from the battery to the disturber box..could that be it? should i lower the gauge of wireing just there then continue it after the box?

I think two gauge should be fine.

My amp is rated at almost 1900rms on the birth sheet and I'm only using 4guage. I think you might need a bigger fuse because my amp draws close to 200 amps, so I use a 200 amp fuse.



You might want to figure out exactly how much current you should be pulling to be sure you have a big enough fuse.

The purpose of the fuse is to protect the wire not to protect your amp. The only exception is when there is not a built in fuse on your amp.



Saying that, you should choose a fuse based on the size wire you are using. 2 gauge wire can handle up to 225A so you can safely add up to a 225A fuse. 4 gauge wire can handle up to 150A so you could safely fuse up to 150A with 4 gauge wire. Your fuse should be at least as big as the fuses on your amp (added value if there is more then one fuse).



If your fuses are still blowing after that then you have a short somewhere in your wiring. Check all of your connections and make sure everything looks okay.

well you need to buy a 110 to 12 volt converter/inverter you can pick them up at radio shack once you get that hook up the red and yellow terminal to the red hookup an the inverter and the black to the black and that should be all you need to get the deck working same with the amp hookup the red and the blue lead from the amp and connect to the same red terminal on the inverter and hook up the black cord from the amp to the same black terminal on the inverter when that is done everything should work

I always install my own parts, simply because its cheaper and its a sense of pride. Also, when you bring car parts to mechanics if its an aftermarket performance part, they hate installing it because it is not theres. I mean its mainly up to you, whether or not you feel up to the challenge. The internet is a great resource to find instructions to install parts or get friends who know what they are doing.

It depends on the level of knowledge the person has with electronics and mechanics since a little of both are required for most installations. I have seen a lot of people do ok but I have also seen a lot of people damage their stereos by wiring it wrong or worse yet causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to their vehicles body computers and wiring. Most of the time, if your not sure of what you're doing, it is best to pay an experienced installer to do it for you. It could turn out to be a lot more expensive in the long run if you do it yourself and make a mistake. It only takes 1 second to do major damage if just one wire gets connected to the wrong place.

1) Check your remote wire that goes from your H/U to your amp (Most times it will be a skinny blue wire 16/18 gauge or abouts.



2) (More likely) Check your ground wire on your amp. It sounds like whoever installed it didnt sand off the paint where the ground wire is attached to your car's chassis. This "Shortcut" will cause problems exactly like what you're describing.



If #2 ends up being right, get your money back for the install, it's a monkey mistake that doesn't deserve pay.

There could be a number of things to cause problems with an amp system. Does it completely shut off as in power or does it stay powered up but just lose sound? Knowing this would have helped narrow down the possibilities a lot.

If it is powering down then check all connections pertaining to power. Battery connections, fuse holder connections, ground connections, and remote turn-on connections. Check all terminals on the wires to make sure the installer got them crimped on properly and tightly. If you are using an AGU (large glass type fuse) at the battery then go ahead and replace it rather it looks blown or not. Some of those fuses can get a bad connection inside them and not look blown. That problem has thrown me off several times before and I am an extremely experienced installer. As mentioned by someone else, make sure the grounding point was scraped clean of all paint down to the bare metal. If the amp has an on-board fuse make sure it has a snug fit into the socket. Sometime the terminals inside the fuse socket can get spread open and the fuse can't get a good connection. If the amp is simply losing sound but not power then the problem could be bad RCA cables, a loose connection in the speaker wiring (could be inside the box if this is a sub amp), a bad spot on a speakers voice coil, or a defect inside the amp itself.

All of these are the steps I would take to troubleshoot the type of problem you are having. If needed, you may want to print this out and take it to your installer so they can see if I've suggested anything that they may have missed or didn't think about. It's not something that deserves demanding a refund as someone also mentioned. Making a mistake with a small fraction of the total labor involved in an install does not validate demanding all your money back. Mistakes happen, to err is human. I bet the person that called your installer a monkey has made several mistakes himself and would feel offended if someone told him he does shabby work because of just one of those mistakes..

hifonics is OK if your on a budget, but i have found over time they arent very reliable, if you have the dual 4ohm version, i would get a cadence iA7 they are GREAT amps very reliable, although you will give each sub 100w rms of headway so make sure you have your gain and stuff rite

Is the cart gas or electric and where did you get power from?

My Mom and Dad used to run a private campground and I have put stereos on many golf carts there. Most electric carts are 36 volt operating on 3 batteries in series so you cannot get power straight from the key switch. You have to go straight to the first battery in the series for power and use a toggle switch to power the radios accessory wire on and off. It sounds like you have tied into the key switch for power which is not good since the power through the key goes to the motor servos on the cart and will have voltage spikes and fluctuation while driving not to mention it will get more than the 12 volts the radio is made to run on which could burn your radio up. Did you check the voltage at your source with a meter to make sure it was 12 volts with no fluctuation while driving? I'm betting that is the problem.

what type of head unit is it? the sony i have has 2 remote wires in the dash so i had to pick the right one. also make sure its a very good ground.you may need to sand the paint off to make a better conductor. make sure your power cord is connected properly to the battery terminal and also on the amp. if all else fails find a friend with a system and hook up your amp to his system and test to see if it works.

critical listening is the only real way, there is allot more going on in a car then just distances, tweeter settings, crossover selections. Alpine is advanced at signal proses sing and i assume you have a crossover and maybe an eq on that.



getting car audio test and set up cd's help and high quality music u enjoy, if u have a garage spend a couple hours here and there finding the best settings, you need quiet and no distractions, even dark helps, u can see where the sound engineers placed the sounds.



google system tuning, for car audio sited for more advice, remember get the system set up for the best possible sound before deliberate sound processing and use the least amount as possible. learn about sound staging, imaging.

I did no initial charging and when I hooked it up I hooked it up with the power running to it then the amp then the ground from the negative to the amp.. caps do not provide more power, sure they can reduce headlight dimming but not cure the cause, your battery may be bad, a yellow top might work better. your alternator might be weak too.



i would do "the big 3" upgrades get a multimeter to monitor the charging system, check at battery should be at 12.5 to 12.9 with car running should be 13.5 to 14.5.



a bad battery will suck amps needed to run the amp trying to charge a battery that cannot be charged, also a weak alternator will not charge the battery or give amps needed for the system.

Believe it or not, your cap IS working. It is doing everything it should be...



The only reason you need to initially charge the cap is because it is a dead short when it is fully discharged. That means that it is going to be 0 volts. When you hook it up to the power wire you will have a 12 volt difference. This means you will have a big spark if you do not charge the cap initially. Other then having the spark and possibly damaging the connections on your cap because of the spark there isn't really a reason you need to charge the cap.



Once the cap is in-line with the power wire it is fully charged. There is no reason to unhook it or try to charge it again. So it is working right now just how it is suppose to.



A cap does NOT prevent headlight dimming issues. Whoever told you that it would was wrong. Nearly all people who buy caps buy them under the wrong assumptions. Caps are only going to stiffen the voltage going to your amp. That means that your voltage won't "jump" around as much as if the cap wasn't there. Caps have a few other benefits but none of them are going to relate to headlight dimming issues.



If you have headlight dimming issues then I suggest two ways to fix it. The first is to do what is called the "big 3" upgrade. That is fairly simple and cheap to do. If you are running a lot of power then the big 3 upgrade won't totally fix your problem. You will then need to do upgrade to a high output alternator if you still have headlight dimming issues after you do the big 3 ugprade.

A stereo would work off of a battery, but for a fairly short time. After, you would need to put the battery on a charger to get it back to full performance (Pain in the neck).



Get an alternator mounted on your motor, and you'll be fine.



FYI, adding the alternator to your power-plant will cost you roughly 3-10% horse-power overall. So it's up to you if it's worth it.

I used to have a 1996 Tahoe and I had 2 12" Kicker subs in the back powered by a 300W Rockford Fosgate Amp. For a 300W amp, that hit harder than the 500W and 750W amp Ive had in the past. Lets just say that on the EQ for the subs, -8 would still shake the truck. The most the EQ would go to was +6. For a vehicle that big, with that much ventilation, you dont need much. With the 2 12s i still had quite a bit of room in the back. Just be sure you have the equipment professionally installed. Another big part is the wiring. The amp power wires would be a good thing to pay that little bit extra for. It will have the power and ground wires. If you use too small of a wire, the amp will be working harder to get the power it needs. Then it will overheat the amp and with most new amps, they have an automatic shut off. So when it gets to be too hot, instead of frying the amp, it just shuts itself off. The max output for the subs i had were 1000W and all I had going to them was 300W. And that was more than enough for me. And if I wanted it to, it shook the ground outside the truck. You dont need much. I hope that helped you out.

It depends what kind of music you're into, and what your goals are. If you care about actual audio quality, and not "Shaking the ground"; you may want to go with a single 10 inch higher end subwoofer (Image Dynamics, JL, etc) In a perfectly sealed box made to the speaker's specifications (No ports, and especially not bandpass!)



Go with a larger amp than the speaker is rated for. Look at the speaker's RMS and NOT MAX wattage. If the speaker's RMS is 200 watts, go with a 300 watt amp (Again NOT MAX.....max wattage is for suckers, stick with the RMS specification.)



Basically, having an overpowered amp turned way down is better than having an underpowered amp overheat and quit on you. Also, underpowered amplifiers will send a more distorted signal which WILL blow your speaker. Distortion kills speakers, more so than over powering.



Lastly, you will need some kind of crossover. Most all amplifiers have a built in hi-lo switch. Make sure that it is turned to LO. Your subwoofers will get toasted if you try to run high or midrange frequencies through them.



Personally, I also like to add an active crossover before the amplifier. This will take out most all high-mid freq. before it even reaches the amplifier.

just hook it up! All you will get is 4 ohm response out of the amp. if you had 2 4ohm subs and they were wired in series than they would pull 2 ohms off the amp. or a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub with the coils wired in series. if you run a 4 ohm sub on the amp it wont hurt anything but you get the full power output of the amp.

If you get another identical subwoofer and run it in parallel (Not series, the previous answer is WRONG), you will get a 2 Ohm load, which will draw on all of your amplifier's power :)



FYI, if you run two 4 ohm single coil speakers in series you end up with 8 ohms !

The 2 ohm rating on the amp just means that's the minimum it can tolerate. The sub will only be a 4ohm load.



If you connect two subs in parallel you will have a 2 ohm load BUT the power handling of both subs will be summed.

Your 3 way crossover goes between your H/U and your amp. It has nothing to do with your cap.



If your are asking from power supply point of view: Just run an extra 8 gauge or even 16 gauge power wire from your distribution block or battery (Before Cap! ). Ground wire should be as short as possible and attached to clean metal (Sand paper helps).



Run the remote wire into your crossover first, and then from your crossover to your amplifier. (Think of two remote wires input/output in one terminal)

I'm a novice when it comes to car audio and car mods in general. So, my question is what should i look for in terms of the specs and what not to find some decent speakers? I'm not exactly looking for the best speakers. I just want them to be noticeably better than the factory speakers so I don't want to spend too much. Is there any specific brand or type of speaker you would recommend for my car? Also, would you recommend getting a full set of four or would just 2 do? also, how do i know what size speaker will fit in my 98 avalon? Thanks a lot!

If you are looking for speakers replace all of them if not the stock speakers will eventually blow because aftermarket stereos put out up to 50 watts per channel and the stock stereo only puts out around 30. Next when looking fo speakers try to find a speaker with a rms power rating around fifty that way there is a very slim chane u could ever blow the speakers. For speakers if you want good sound quality u will want an hz range from 20-2200 that is the rang of human hearing. Cannot be done.

The stock radio is part of a network of modules in the vehicle that communicate with each other. Without the other modules on the network, the radio will not operate, as it will "think" that it has been stolen. There is currently no way to simulate the network of modules that the radio is looking for when powered up.

Dont know y would it have a defect on the radio it just came off assembly line but if u have navigation it might be that the wiring is set up wrong or theres a wire not in the correct place or a wire hanging out or it could be the antenna brand new car radio dont just have malfunction it has to be something

The radio is like anything man made. Every now and then there is a bad one. However this should have been caught at the dealership that done the PDI. Go back to the dealer as it will be on warranty on a new car.

Try lumber yards that specialize in recycled wood. This is wood from torn down houses and it's not as expensive.



My dad use to buy this kind of lumber for the odd carpentry jobs around the house or barns or repairs that wouldn't be seen like attic work and saved a fortune. There might be some nice wood at these places ready for sanding, polishing, varnishing, and making into boxes.

I would look at your local craigslist and see if there is any listed or put a ad in the wanted area of what you need and what you need done to it, in this economy I would bet there is someone with a saw and tools in thier garage to cut and even make this for you pretty cheap. Besides that Home Depot since they buy in bulk most likely is the cheapest place around. Oh and craigslist may even have listings for one already made ready to sell too. Just bring a friend with you and meet in a public place to purchase it from them if your concerned.

Home depot is a good place to get your MDF. It's usually between 20 and 25 dollars, for a 4' x 8' sheet. But, the price varies by area. For 2 12 box, you should only need one sheet. But, I'd have to take a look at the design to tell you for sure.

first turn the gain all the way down, then turn your head unit volume to max.

now slowly turn the amp gain up until the signal clips (distorts), and once you find where that is, keep it just below that point.

If you want to replace the stock unit with another stock I'd talk to a dealer.

It might be kind of expensive to buy from a dealer though, so you might consider just going in to find more specifics about the head and then searching craigslist
