Check the fuse's, maybe went out
shreddinnotes @ 2009-06-30 08:58:20

Is the battery dead from sitting?
dell_fargus @ 2009-06-30 08:58:58

Depends. Does it come on but no sound comes out? If so then you need to input the anti theft code. If you do not have it you'll have to go to a dealer. If it does not come on at all check fuses. Most radios also have a small fuse built in that can blow so you may need to take it out of the dash.
uthockey32 @ 2009-06-30 08:59:31

Try buying a new radio.Your old one has damage from moisture. Spend a few bucks and get a new one--trust me. Your speakers are probably toast also.
pghpatt @ 2009-06-30 09:00:20

Yes indeed. Its the fuse. There shouldnt be a problem unless it was damaged somehow. The fuses are cheap. Go the the auto parts store and tell them you need a new fuse for your radio. They will give you a box that contains different ones. Just match the fuse to the correct one and crank up the tunes!

And 98 saabs dont have anti theft codes. lol If it were the battery then the engine wouldnt start. If that was the case I dont think her concern would be the radio. Right?

Cd player only has one sub output.?
[Question]
I recently installed a 745ba head unit in my civic, and it has 2 rca outputs and 1 subwoofer rca output, I'm about to get 2 12's and a monoblock amp and I will be wiring it to 2 ohms, but I am confused about how I should wire it in to the back of my cd player, I guess I could wire it to rca and not use subwoofer output but then I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to use the subwoofer controls on my head unit. But I've heard if its monoblock you only need 1 rca cable? So if anyone could clear this up for me and tell me how to wire it I would really appreciate it.
skimmer369 @ 2009-06-30 08:10:41

[All Answers]
Subs are only single channel anyway.

Use your sub out on the head unit.
Mr. KnowItAll @ 2009-06-30 08:17:23

Plug the single woofer rca from your deck into your amp (chances are it will have 2 inputs) then plug your sub in and all will work perfectly.
DarkRider @ 2009-06-30 08:52:19

plug the rca cables into the sub output. you only need one rca cable. but 1 rca cable comes with a left and right audio. If you only use half a cable (just a left or just a right) you'll only get half the sound.
RJ @ 2009-06-30 09:09:49

For a mono block amplifier you only use one set of RCA cable

plug one end of the RCA cable into the sub out in the back of your deck and the other end into the Input plugs on the amplifier

what brand of speaker wire to use?
[Question]
right now i am useing scosche 14 ga speaker wire. is that a good brand of wire?
James @ 2009-06-30 07:42:16

[All Answers]
not bad but kind of expensive.

when it comes down to it, wire is wire, 14ga scosche is the same as 14ga 'king' (walmart) brand wire.
Eric F @ 2009-06-30 07:46:33

If you want the good stuff try 400series speaker cable by Monster. It is a little pricey at $2-3 per foot and a bit hard to find but it is worth it. I have also tried the Rockford Fosgate wire that Best Buy carries and it is decent and much cheaper but I would definitely recommend the MonsterCable.
EI @ 2009-06-30 08:09:24

Not all speaker wire is the same, you get what you pay for.

Here's an example on some power wire both say it's 10ga,but as you can see it's not the same.

wishmaster @ 2009-06-30 08:14:40

What I believe is the best wire on the market for car audio installs is StreetWires stuff is pretty spendy compared to others but you wont get better than that. you can order it online or you can go to your local car audio shop and get it I am pretty sure that they would be using street wires

Yes that would be just fine, the bigger the wire the better.

MTX recommends 4ga. for that amp anyway.
wishmaster @ 2009-06-30 05:05:12

you will never have a problem with going to larger wire, unless the wire doesn't fit. and yes while 4 gauge wire will allow more power to run through it then 8 gauge wire, unless your amp is drawing enough power to burn up the 8 gauge wire, you won't notice a difference. the wire you run really has little effect on how hot your amp runs.

So every time i brake, my car's stereo changes or rewinds the song...how do i fix this?
[Question]
Its a 96 bmw 318ti with a pioneer face plate. Is it faulty wiring or an on board computer deal? Also, i have noticed that on hot days (i live in dallas) the volume on the stereo goes up and up..
Aenehzodaee @ 2009-06-30 09:08:03

[All Answers]
the first problem sounds like a wiring problem.

the second sounds like you need a new stereo.

I would check the wiring first to make sure everything is wired like it needs to be.
RJ @ 2009-06-30 09:15:37

That is without a doubt the weirdest thing I've ever heard happen! If I had to guess, there's most likely a small screw or a piece of metal inside the radio that's broken loose and hitting the metal contacts inside the radio so everytime you hit the brakes its hitting them...best thing to do might be to try a different radio to see if still happens. The volume issue may also be related especially if the internal board is damaged.
Viktobog @ 2009-06-30 09:18:24

Solution-Dont hit the brakes!

nah just kidding. i know in my friends van the radio gets louder the faster you drive. maybe ur did and now that part is broke. as for the changing songs, id asume that the other guy is right with the piece of metal broken off in there

Car keeps getting broken into, is alarm worth it?
[Question]
My car, 1998 Honda Civic EX, has been broken into 3 times in the last several months, All three times in completely different areas of town, the third time was last night, and I know several cars on my street were hit as well, cause I saw 4 other cars on my neighborhood street with busted out windows.

After the first break in, I learned the hard lesson not to keep anything of value in my car. Also with the first break in they stole my stock car alarm.

which brings me to my question. how well do car alarms work? obviously my stock car alarm wasnt worth shit. If I buy an after market car alarm, I feel like I would still have this big doubt in my head.

Can I expect to be worry free if I buy some kind of quality car alarm?

Or is it all just a salesman gimmick? a waste of money, cause if someone wants to steal/break into a car, theyre not gonna stop until they do so, many times whether the car is making loud noises or not.

Any and every contribution is appreciated.

Thank You!
I live in an 80s Neighborhood, on the "good" side of town. You know, the area where people live in the false reality where this type of thing doesnt happen to them.

anyway, I am moving in about 5 to 6 weeks.
Billy @ 2009-06-29 10:52:46

It sounds like a rough neighborhood! If you're not going to be able to check out the car alarm at any hour, and be able to hear it, its kind of a waste. Anyways by the time you hear it your car has already been broken in to.

Save the money you'd spend on an alarm, and move yourself to a nicer place
Eric F @ 2009-06-29 10:59:54

you have to learn how to not show off when youre about to park ANYWERE, specially if your car is modded... trust me it helps... then you should get a alarm with a pager since most of them have a high distance range to alert you... youre better off spending a little more cash on a good alarm , yet it will protect your car more since they come with sensors on the doors , trunk , hood, windows, and ignition. they range about 300-500 dlls ........ GOOD LUCK WITH THAT AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR HONDA =)
Henry @ 2009-06-29 11:04:31

They broke into your car and actually stole your stock alarm? WTF! Yeah I think aftermarket alarms are worth it, my 98 Accord has a alarm on it and its never been broken into(knock on wood). Just make sure the LED for the alarm is in a visible location, most thieves will just move on to the next car. you could also get one of those alarms with a pager hooked to it, don't know to much about them.
Ken D @ 2009-06-29 11:06:52

maybe a alarm would help because if you get one with a loud speaker and one that honks the horn it will be real loud and peaple will look out side and make does SOB run like **** lol so yea go with it but get a good one with a display on the control so when they do break in you will know and also get a good brand lke viper or auto page and with a lond distance like 1 mile long

Protection light? could be a short, could be overheating
Ken D @ 2009-06-29 11:09:02

Your amplifier is stable at 2-ohm per channel and it is also stable at 2-ohm when bridged to mono. If you go below 2 ohm, say 1 ohm, your amp will go into protection mode to protect itself because it cannot handle the load. You should of gave more detail, like the specs for your subs or something. Is your amp hot to the touch? Sometimes my amp gets hot and it goes into protect for about 10 minutes then it comes back on...so check all your wiring and the load your putting on your amplifier.

Good Luck.

Can I just replace the CD player, probably?
[Question]
My car's CD player broke. The CD got stuck in it and now it won't come one. The radio part of the stereo still works, but when I hit CD it says something like "read error" and I can't get the CD out.

So...

Can I just get a new CD player/stereo?

And will they be able to get my CD out of the old one when they take it out?

Thanks!
It was a burned, homemade cd.

It has played those before, though...?
jen @ 2009-06-29 09:25:16

[All Answers]
yes and yes to both questions
bayareart1 @ 2009-06-29 09:43:32

Have you tried the "paper clip" to get the CD out?

Tale a heavy paperclip (one of the bigger ones) and straighten out one of the bends so you have 1"-2" straight.

On the front of the CD player you will find a small hole. This is the manual eject access port. Place the end of the paperclip in the hole and push firmly. It takes some pressure (like pushing through a steak, not through steel) but that should pop the drawer open and allow you to get the CD out.

Some stereo sets have separate CD players and others are part of the entire stereo. You'll just have to check with a car audio place as to what they can do to replace the unit.

`
Kekionga @ 2009-06-29 09:49:46

Are you playing a cd that is compatible with your cd player? All cd players don't accept CD-R, MP3 or WMA, try a regular purchase cd!Check your manual, if you don't have a manual, try to search for it online!

How do I play my MP3 player in the car?
[Question]
I just bought a new car and you can plug an MP3 player in it. The hole that you put the pin in is the same size as the pin for headphones. What size are headphone pins? I need a wire that has two pins at either end (one to put the MP3 player in and one to put in the car) so what exactly do I ask for at the store? Thanks.
I was just looking online and I think what I need is a 3.5 adapter. Would I be able to find one that has pins on both ends?
spe145 @ 2009-06-29 10:29:25

[All Answers]
Your MP3 player must have a USB port somewhere. Otherwise it most probably is the same port as the one with which you connect it to your computer. The port you are talking about is most probably for some other purpose.
Siddharth Jain @ 2009-06-29 10:37:12

I got mine with the car. And every cable I will need. Just check your glovebox and dig in there and see if you missed any cables. Just go to Best Buy and talk to the person in the car audio section( or something like that) and ask them.

kicker amp with kicker sub ?
[Question]
I have a kicker L5 12' at 2ohm voice coils and i would like to buy the kicker amp 400.1 with 200w power at 4ohm and 400w at 2ohms ...The questions is..I want my sub to work with this amp at 400w at 2 ohms.it will work ??? my kicker is wired to work at 1 ohm load.
cute_white_shark @ 2009-06-28 05:01:32

[Best Answer]The ZX400.1 is not 1 ohm stable.

The amp will overheat and go into protect mode when driven hard for extended periods of time.

Small (400W x 1 RMS) 1 ohm stable amps are challenging to find. Would recommend rewiring the dual voice coils in series to 4 ohm and finding an amp that runs 400W x 1 at a 4 ohm load.

Amps that do 400W x 1 RMS at a 4 ohm load are plentiful and easy to find. Shouldn't cost much either...
RPM @ 1246207759

[All Answers]
yeh it will work perfectly fine just avoid cranking the bass a bit to high, distortion blew my kickersubs..

remember this: good amp means any sub will work, good sub means u need a good amp. that amp is quite good so it'll easily run that sub at 2ohms.

In car audio you can always go lower (eg: 200w can run a 100w) u jst cant go higher..

If it doesnt work your wiring is wrong.. best option take it to professional just get their advice before doing it urself, it will work 4 sure but they'll tell u how to wire it perfectly
slimx91 @ 2009-06-28 05:29:42

Yes the 400watt at 2ohms will work, you will most likely have to bridge the sub for it to work at the 2ohms same thing happened with one of my subs

you can not run that sub at 2 ohms only 1 or 4 ohms. the 400.1 would still be under powering that sub even at 2 ohms.look into the hifonics BXi 610 (BXi610). this is a cheap but average amplifier that is stable at 1 ohm which is where your sub is wired to. oh yahh almost all kicker amps are only 2ohm stable, not 1.
nick l @ 2009-06-28 06:29:14

NO NO NO. The amp is not stable at 1 ohm. It might work and be loud, but it will likely overheat and have a shortened lifespan. Go for it if you may, but theres a reason kicker doesnt have a power spec @ 1 ohm.

If you have dual 2 ohm voice coils, you need an amp that makes max power at 1 or 4 ohm mono.
odinsragess @ 2009-06-28 07:36:41

The ZX400.1 is not 1 ohm stable.

Which is the best subwoofer system for a honda civic?

I think sony is best.
Kunal Chawla @ 2009-06-28 04:24:08

There are two giants in the Indian market, pioneer - tested ad proven over the years, but, there are a lot of fakes of pioneer these days and it is so difficult to make out. The other and the better option is Sony X-plode, It surely is a good unit and everyone knows the quality Sony comes with. Go in for the Sony Amp and the X-plode series sub-woofer system. and people can hear you coming in your car from miles.

FM Transmitter or Cassette Tape Adapter for 4th Gen ipod Nano?
[Question]
I have an 4th generation ipod nano. I would like your honest opinions with your experiences with an FM transmitter or a Cassette Tape Adapter or both (only if you owned both of these accessories). Please mention your satisfaction with the product (i.e. sound quality, difficulty of using the product, etc.). I would like to get one of these accessories for my car but I'm not sure what to purchase.
Colin H @ 2009-06-28 08:29:00

[All Answers]
The sound was better with a cassette adapter, but when my on-board cassette player died, I switched to the FM transmitter (iTrip, specifically). It's almost as good, but I lose reception at one or two intersections near a giant mall (!) and you'll sometimes get "cross-play" if you're near another car with one using the same frequency.

They're both easy to use, but the FM transmitter takes a little work to set up since you might have to change the default station from 87.9 to something else. I switched mine to 94.7 because a lot of people here in Cleveland leave it on the default.

The cassette adapter had the added advantage of allowing you to raise the volume on the iPod, thereby raising the volume on the car stereo (cranking it to "11", so to speak).
monkeydamour @ 2009-06-28 08:34:11

Not too impressed with the FM xmtr (Monster Cable version). Signal gets interference sometimes, sound quality average. Cassette adapter sounds better, no radio interference, need to hold ipod close to radio so depends on your car.

Both are OK, have their pluses and minuses.
Uncle Bo @ 2009-06-28 08:35:17

I've got the same iPod and I got a set of 3 from Sainsbury's for about £20. It included an iPod USB cable, mains charger and FM transmitter. That was a good deal because they seem quite expensive. I think it was a belkin tunecast ii. It is easy to use but the battery life is quite poor. I'd rate it 3 out of 5. The sound quality of it is quite good.

Overall, if you want a cheap FM transmitter for your iPod with decent sound then it is quite good. If you're worried about battery life, maybe get some rechargeable batteries for it.

Hope this helps, good luck in finding one that suits you!

Car amplifier in home quick question.?
[Question]
I have an old power supply (about 300 watts i believe) and i tried powering my car amp with it. It would turn on then off immediately (I think the PSU was going into protection mode be cause my amp has 3 20amp fuses on it). My question is if i connect all the 12 volt wires on my PSU together and then to the amplifier will that supply enough amps to power it or will it still be the same?
Ok i figured but i thought i would ask anyways before I went to find an old car battery. I have heard about wiring PSU's in parallel but looks like it would be cheaper and easier to get a car battery.
Adam @ 2009-06-28 09:38:09

[All Answers]
lol, no... Get a bench testing 12v power supply. Computer power supplies are not made to operate under that load.

Or drag in an old car battery, and keep it charged with a charger.

In answer to you question. The PSU power supply only has 3 or so 12v lead outs... you will only get 12-18amps at most.
John_Dempst @ 2009-06-28 09:42:49

If the amp has 3*20 amp fuses then my calculations would say that the amp is a 720 watt amp way over the rating of PSU. 20 amps at 12V is 240 watts of power.

Amp smokes when power and ground are attached?
[Question]
I have a Punch 401s Amp with power acoustik 12" sub. I got it from someone who didn't know if it worked or not. When I hooked the Power, ground and remote turn on wires it began to smoke. The head unit was off so it shouldn't have been receiving power in the first place. I opened the amp up and found a couple of blown transistors. Here is a picture of them...

http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/ae166/cmason_80/100_5196.jpg

There is also a transistor on the opposite side of the board that the corner is missing from.

I was wondering what would cause these to blow, and why it smokes even when it doesn't have a remote turn on signal?

Is there some way to replace the transistors and repair the amp?

Also could this have damaged the Subwoofer?

I know I asked a lot of questions there, but I'm completely lost when it comes to car audio equipment.

Irv S @ 2009-06-28 09:58:12

It probably didnt damage the sub if you didnt hear anything from the sub--- but the amp is toast. Not worth repairing. Not many places repair amps anymore. Could have been an internal short that did it.

Call fosgate and ask them how much it costs to re-board the amp. I did this with an MTX once... I sent them the amp, 55 dollars, and they put a whole new board in it. See what fosgate charges. If not, suck up and get a new amp. Perhaps the amp was abused, or someone used to low of an impedance.

Dont worry about the sub too much though, power acoustik is generally a cheap flea market brand.

Why do my aftermarket speakers produce hardly any bass?

I recently purchased a pair of 5 way 1000W Kenwood 6 x 9 speakers and installed them in behind my back seats. THe sound quality from the mid and the tweeters is amazing but the bass is almost non existent and sound extremely bad. The stock speakers in the car would give me a pretty decent amount of bass. can anyone help to figure out this problem??

Most likely cause your head unit can't give the speakers enough watts to run the speakers properly. try buying an amp. Better then that buy subs if you want bass. Speakers dont cut it.

Ok... first off, i dont recall kenwood making 5 way speakers. Are you sure you didnt get cheap flea market crap "kingwood" speakers or any other rip off brand with a similar sounding name? They wouldnt handle 200 watts let alone 1000... Look up kingwood, its cheap flea market crap.

Anyways, they might be wired out of polarity. Reverse the positive and negative of ONE of the speaker connections and see if it makes a diff. If they are out of polarity, the bass waves will cancel each other out.

Are they installed in the factory location? Or a box? Once in awhile I still see some idiot with 6x9's just laying on top of a rear deck or something lol

--- ryan i want you to EXPLAIN to me why 5 way speakers would have different bass output than 2 way. The 5 ways just have a few extra tweeters or midranges, but the woofer is still a woofer... His problem is they are flea market crap speakers, possibly wired wrong, installed wrong, or he is expecting too much out of speakers (which claim 1000 watts, LMAO!)
odinsragess @ 2009-06-27 10:15:30

The speakers are 5 way. DUHHHHH. Of course your not gunna get a lot of bass. If you want more bass from speakers, go for 2 way speakers. And put them on an 4 channel amplifier. If you want a lot of bass get sub woofers.

Thank you everybody.

Hm-mm...that's a interesting situation you have there. The problem you may have if that there is a loose wire connected to the three speakers. Check if the right hand side speakers are any different from the others and if they are not factory installed speakers.

If so, then that might be the problem that the new ones were not correctly installed.

If not, then ring/contact the person that you brought the vehicle from and ask them if they have had any of the same problems. You never know they might be able to help you

Hope I have helped :)
Rohan @ 2009-06-27 10:54:51

If the sound always comes back on radio, then it may be a loose lead connecting the changer to the head unit: Switch the stereo on & have a good wiggle of the leads & connectors at the changer, then pull the head unit out & do the same & that end.

Otherwise, it sounds like there's an internal problem with the head unit, which should just be replaced.
J G @ 2009-06-27 10:56:05

the speakers may just be blown that means that you or the person that currently had it turned up the volume to loud!
Brook @ 2009-06-27 10:57:51

For all three speakers to go out, it has to be more than just a wire issue. Unless you have an amp, the amp could be damaged. My guess would be either the head unit or the amp has internal issues.

kelly_f_1999 @ 2009-06-27 12:08:17

No, you do not need another battery. A capacitor is only necessary usually if you have a very powerful amp that causes your lights to dim out and drain the battery quickly. Adding another battery will also require adding another alternator which is about 100-200 bucks.

fffffffffffffff
Fsdfsdfsdf D @ 2009-06-27 08:42:55

you are using the right gauge wire... with the output... you could get the biggest wire.. and it will still sound the same... but you could by some better speaker wire... makes a load of difference... try monster... or even go online and buy mtx wire.

EDIT: your question is a lil odd to bro... why go to a smaller wire... you not going to get all the power from the amp... if you was to go to 16 you might get 100 watts out of your amp tops!
Logan @ 2009-06-27 08:43:50

Logan--- you dont know what you are talking about. 16 gauge wire is FINE for interior speakers and will suffice for more than 100 watts. It depends on the length, too. 8 gauge would be fine for a real powerful amp, if the cable was 2 feet long lol. You can buy the 14 gauge just to be safe. Once you start getting longer than 12 feet or so, I would use 14 gauge then.

Run a single 4 gauge wire back to a distribution block, then run 2 short 8 gauges to the amp.

If you are just running speaker wire to the interiors, 16 is more than enough. The longer the wire, the thicker it has to be. The impedance of your speakers also comes into play.

From the wiki --

" The resistance of 16-gauge or heavier speaker connection cable has no detectable effect in runs of 50 feet (15 meters) or less in standard domestic loudspeaker connections. Insulation thickness or type also no audible effect as long as the insulation is of good quality "

Also, monster cable will sound no different than any other quality speaker cable-- dont believe the hype. Its all marketing!

Two amps, one capacitor?
[Question]
I have a 4 channel amp running the door speakers in my car already. I'm adding a mono block amp to run my 2 12in JL W3s. The 4 channel amp has a 8 gauge power wire (with fuse). The mono block amp has a 4 gauge power wire (with fuse). I also have a spare 4 gauge power wire (with fuse). The capacitor itself is made for 4 gauge wire. When i went to Best Buy to see how much they charge to install it, they tried to tell me that they would be charging for the capacitor install and for two amp installs because they have to rewire it. Now for my question: How can I do it myself without spending an arm and a leg?

chris c @ 2009-06-26 09:42:22

TheBobbieNicole @ 2009-06-26 09:43:07

The capacitor doesn't need to be hooked up to your car speakers as they do not use much watts. The capacitor should only be hooked up to your sub's amp. Best buy is dumb. go elsewhere.
sirmajorlee @ 2009-06-26 09:43:14

We're only talking about two wires, right? Actually one wire, as a pair, between the amp and the cap. I'm assuming the cap is under the bonnet, and the amp is under the seat or in the boot/truck (whatever you call the rear of your car in your country).

You can see this wire as it leaves the cap, and you can see it as it enters the amp. In between it's hiding under carpets, seats, plastic frames. Follow the path and thread another cable through. You don't need to remove the amp or the cap, so long as you can get to the power terminals.
Jade @ 2009-06-26 09:48:48

Two amps, TWO capacitors, and try to keep the amount of wire between each amp and its capacitor as short as possible.

An amp pulls an amount of current from the electrical system that fluctuates according to the sound that the amp is amplifying. Those fluctuations are a SIGNAL, and a signal on the power supply can affect other amps that are hooked up to the supply. The purpose of the capacitors is to isolate the amps from one another.
pzifisssh @ 2009-06-26 09:49:37

The capacitor is made to be wired in parallel with the amp. You may need connection blocks or some other method of making a secure connection to accomplish this but just connect the positive of the cap to the positive of the subwoofer amp and connect the negative to the same ground point as the subwoofer amp. That's it! The sub amp is the only thing that really needs the cap because of the high power draw. Electrically the capacitor will still be wired to everything in the car because the positive to the amp and soon to be cap is wired to the positive of the battery.
Cardaba @ 2009-06-26 10:01:15

You will have to rewire the entire system...

In order to accomodate the new mono amp and capacitor, you will need to purchase a distribution block with a 4 gauge input and 3 4 gauge outputs.

4 gauge cable from the battery to a distribution block.

4 gauge cable from Distribution block to capacitor. Make sure that your power and ground cables for the capacitor are less than 18 inches.

4 gauge cable from Distribution block to Mono amp

8 gauge cable from Distribution block to 4 channel amp.

Dont forget the corresponding grounds for each amp.

You will end up spending some money for this. But it costs money to do things right. The most expensive part of this is the wiring that you need.

Another important point to consider. Remember to charge the capacitor before you hook up the power wires to it. Otherwise you will quickly end up with a nickname like smoky or sparky.

Sometimes there is a small little hole in the front of the cd player that you can stick a pin in to eject CD's .

If not just remove the top of the cd player and see if there is a way to remove any internal parts to do it. This is easier than it seems. Just becareful of the small springs that some have.
Just Call me AJ @ 2009-06-26 03:48:59

Connect the earth and the positive wires to a car battery and hit the button. There may be a small hole to insert a bent paperclip to eject it but unlikely.
Timbo is here @ 2009-06-26 03:58:42

The easiest way will be to take the radio to a car and set it on the car for a ground, then put a jumper wire from battery positive to the power wire of the radio. It will now have 12 volts and just ht eject. You can do this at home also use a battery charger, hook up positive and negative hit eject!
Scott H @ 2009-06-26 04:29:24

By far the easiest way is to plug it into another car: all wiring is now standard & swapping a radio or removing one to unplug from most cars will take around 30 seconds.

Do you have to separate subwoofers in the same box and why?
[Question]
I'm building a subwoofer box that is consisting of 3 12" subs, do i have to seal them off so that they each have a third of the box each or can they run all together with the full space?
The box is going to be sealed and the three subs are going to be two of the same make and one different make.
Michael @ 2009-06-26 07:36:59

[All Answers]
It all depends on if the box is sealed of if you are going to vent (port) it. If it is sealed no it can be all the way open as long as it is large enough for all the subs. If you vent it (I suggest) I would separate the 3 subs into there own chamber. The key is to make the box large enough for all of the subs...vented or sealed
Dan @ 2009-06-26 08:16:08

you don't have to give each subwoofer its own chamber, but its a smart thing to do if you are going with a sealed box.

in a sealed box, if one of the woofers blows, then you suddenly have a box that is too large for the other woofers, which will give them a good chance to blow also.

if it were a ported box, then it wouldn't be necessary. but you definitly want to seperate the chambers in a sealed box.
RJ @ 2009-06-26 08:37:13

separate the speakers, when the subs play the air will be pushed out causing it to push the next sub up and so on... if you don't do that then the subs won't sound as good.

Sub woofer for the car?
[Question]
Can i connect the sub directly to my mp3 player? or can it only go through an amplifier?
Jaber N @ 2009-06-26 07:23:44

[All Answers]
You can connect it directly but without some kind of equalization, I doubt you'll like the way it sounds.

The fundamental laws of physics make reproduction of deep bass notes inefficient. To get a "flat" response (equal volume at all frequencies) you need to either amplify the bass notes to high power levels or lower the non-bass notes with an equalizing network.

The equalization approach is a good one if you can do it before the power amplifier. Does your MP3 player have a hook-up for a graphic equalizer? If not, equalizing after the power amp just throws most of your power away. Not a good thing.
Justa @ 2009-06-26 07:48:06

nope. subwoofers require way more power to run then an mp3 player can provide. so you need an amp for one.
RJ @ 2009-06-26 08:42:08

rj is right, you cannot do that, the sub requires a lot of power, you can't even power a set of speakers that are 3" and get good sound, stick to connecting it through the amp, its always possible you might burn the output (headphone) on your mp3 player

I think it probably depends on the box size Cuase their would be to much pressure inside the non ported box if it was small and would effect your sound quality or damage somthing like the box or woofer.

Thats just an assumption though as ive never actually tried this myself.

Goodluck! :)
Nikita @ 2009-06-26 06:39:44

For Rap music you would probably prefer the ported enclosure built properly .

don't buy the shallow mount unless you have to, for mounting depth problems, and they will work very well in sealed enclosures between .75ft - 1.25ft3, but if you have the room - Ported /Non shallow.

If you are not going to build the enclosure or have a pro build it for you the KPVR series from Audio Enhancers works very well with the P3's
masterinstall3 @ 2009-06-26 07:14:08

you can use any type of enclosure that you want. its all down to personal preference, and the amount of space you want to spare.

ported boxes are louder, sealed boxes are smaller.

With only 0.4 cubic foot difference (0.2 cubic foot per sub) you will not notice much of a difference at all. The difference in sound would likely be unnoticeable or barely noticeable.

You need to make sure you tune the enclosure correctly to compensate for the smaller enclosure. The port length is related to the internal volume so if you have a smaller enclosure you need to make the port longer to keep the same tuning frequency.

What you could do, if you want to get around 5.2 cubic foot, is to add polyfill to the enclosure. You would need to cover the ports so it doesn't come out but other then that you would easily make up for the difference in volume.

Good Luck!!!
MDC @ 2009-06-25 11:05:06

yea i think it would be fine aslong as you still tune the port.

I want subs, an amp, and a box to improve my car audio system. What should I get?
[Question]
I am driving a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 that is four door. I want to know what kind of sub & amp combo would be the best for me. Also, I want to know what kind of box I need to get. Specific websites and brand names would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

i would go with two or one 12s pioneer, kenwood, JVC all of them are good and try to get a kenwood amp around about 500 watts it'll power those 12s perfect
Delphia55 @ 2009-06-25 11:41:49

since you have a truck I would go with shallow subs.

JL W5 would do good with a 1000/1v2 slash

JL is the best of quality.
Jamaal @ 2009-06-25 11:49:54

I also drive a Dodge Ram mine is a 2 door though

Memphis PR Series Subs- Cheap, Reliable, 3 Year Warranty

You will need the box to go under the back seat

Amp depends on whether it will power just the sub(s) or everything
demsoxsboyz @ 2009-06-25 11:50:18

I would recommend getting twin Memphis M-Class 10" Subs. The place you buy them at (if not a website) will probably be able to build you two boxes for around $100. A Memphis PR-Class 1000W Amp would be a good choice, as it could easily power both the subs and any stock speaker system, and it's a 5-channel (I'm pretty sure. Maybe a 4-channel.).

If you have the money to spend this would be a good amp.

Alpine PDX 1.1000

or

Alpine MRP-M1000

Either way look for a mono amp that has 1000 watts rms at 2ohms.

get a 2000 w Amp or stronger. or go with two 1000w amps and wire them together the amps usually have a low pass and a bass boost just set the setting right and it will blow out your windows lol jk
Richard D. @ 2009-06-25 10:14:39

if the rms of your subs are 100 rms and you want to hook both subs to one amp the you need to get about a 250 RMS amp when you get an amp dont look at the max wattage look for the rms thats really what the amp pushes a real 250 watt amp will cost you up around $180 or less.

Subwoofer + Amplifier?
[Question]
Would this be a good setup? I don't know much about car audio but I'm looking to purchase my first sub and amp - fairly cheaply.

Amp

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6470_Alpine+MRP-M450.html

Sub

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11841_Alpine+SWE-1243.html

I want to make sure that the amp will put out enough power for it (I think it will - 220 RMS for a sub that's 250 RMS). How would they perform in general? I don't want to buy them and then be like "ah fuck...."

Also, what exactly does ohms mean? I know that you have to match them up but Idk what it means really.
Caliban @ 2009-06-25 09:57:16

[All Answers]
if your lookin for a lil sumthang to just feel the bass not to rattle your trunk..i would go with kicker comps...you should get a 4ohm cuz you could basicaly wire it to any amp..usually the rms doubles..sub being 250 rms would be 500 watts max..
stockton209er @ 2009-06-25 10:05:50

It wouldn't be too bad of a setup, but your sub can hit 750 watts at peak power. I would get at least a 600 watt amp monoblock amp, alpine does make good amps I had one and was ver satisfied with it.

Also, I just found a website today that could save you money www.dealercostcaraudio.com they are cheap but still have the same stuff as all other people do.

Hope this helped you
pufhead2001 @ 2009-06-25 10:08:41

First of all DO NOT ORDER FROM DEALERCOSTCARAUDIO.COM THEY HAVE VERY POOR SERVICE AND YOU WILL GET A HEADACHE FROM THEM. It took SEVERAL emails and TWO months of waiting to receive my friend's 12W6v2. DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM WHATEVER YOU DO. Onlinecarstereo.com all the way if you want to order on the internet, they accept paypal and service is very well worth it.

Now back to what I was going to say. I remember when I was like you, looking for something cheap and match the sub with the amp. In all honesty don't go TOO cheap. If you do then you will regret it because you wasted all that time putting it in for nothing. You will want to to turn sub up and you will end up blowing a voice coil. For me to be telling you this, you are lucky because I didn't have any help with buying things when I first started off three years ago. Since you don't want to spend a lot of money I will give you a cheap solution but NOT that cheap. You won't regret it either.

Amp - http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=19580

Sub - http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=14956

---make sure it's the duel voice coil four ohm and not two ohm---

Total - $434

Reason why I chose that amp for is because Hifonics is very very dependable. I actually have this same amp at one ohm on a SS T5 and it's great. Reason I chose this sub for you is because Alpine type R's are cheap and very very hard to blow. They are not the best at sound quality but for your first system you just want it to work and not blow. I am not that big of a fan of Alpine but since you don't want to spend a lot, they are probably the best choice.

With this system your amp will be putting out 900W so don't put the bass boost all the way up although you could because the sub is strong. Safe side keep it 3/4 up. When you wire the sub, wire it in PARALLEL so the amp puts 2 ohm not 8. http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp?Q=1&I=42

If you want to spend more later, JL, FI, or RE.

Trust me, this is the best bang for the buck and you won't be in the position where you blow a voice coil in the next year. You will definitely NOT regret it.

yes but do not turn it up so loud. Because you can overload the speakers.

Besides I bet the CD player says 50W but that will be 50W "RMS", the actual wattage will be nothing like that.

Yes you will be fine.
Evangeline @ 2009-06-24 06:56:39

You should fine. It's not likely the radio puts out a constant 50w anyways. That would be a peak output rating.
The Eagle Keeper @ 2009-06-24 06:57:02

YEAH BUT I WOULDNT MAX OUT THE VOLUME
Kung Fu Panda @ 2009-06-24 06:58:22

It's not a problem. A high-powered CD unit won't have the power of a true 4 x 50W RMS amp.

Your deck is probably half the power tops, RMS. Expect some distortion at high volume levels.

if you can dream it, it can be done. However, go to your local car audio shop and get a quote on the labour to make it work. While ALMOST anything is possible, custom work can get expensive.
Adrian @ 2009-06-24 10:30:50

Yes you can just check out sonixelectronic.com and look at car stereo and receivers. This is a pretty simple do it yourself project. But if you dont have total confidence then an expert would be the way to go.
TvBoy @ 2009-06-24 10:32:34

Absolutely. In-dash DVD monitors come in both single DIN and double DIN sizes. Some have the navigation built-in, some have navigation that is sold separately which you can add-on to the receiver.

You'll need to know what your radio size is first. If you don't know, use the What Fits My Car feature at Crutchfield.com. Use Crutchfield to research models too. Then search around on sonicelectronix.com or Etronics.com for the models you like and you want to purchase. Their prices will be far cheaper than Crutchfield. The only benefit from Crutchfield is they give you installation instructions, technical support, and any needed adapters for free if you want to do the installation yourself. Installing a DVD player really isn't all that difficult to do. If you can install a CD player in a car, you'll be able to do a DVD player as well.

Drive whatever you are going to be most comfortable in. Most people are nervous enough taking the test without having to get used to another car. Just remember to keep both hands on the wheel if you aren't actually changing gears and don't ride with your foot over the clutch pedal.
John F @ 2009-06-24 10:11:34

I would advise taking the test in an auto. I've heard many stories of people doing poorly driving with a standard. For example if you coast rather than gear down you will get points taken off. If you had bad luck and stalled, or shifted poorly you could ahve points taken off.

If you are confident in your skills drive the standard you'll feel better :D But much less can go wrong in an auto.
Adrian @ 2009-06-24 10:11:51

Use it if you feel comfortable with the stick shift. Otherwise, the automatic is probably a safer bet.

Thanks for looking guys
PICK MEEE! @ 2009-06-24 09:43:02

[All Answers]
its a waste of money just buy better speakers. the subs require more power to get the sound that you want out of them which is why you need an amp to up the wattage. they'll barely work with them wired to where a speaker would be and they would only play the low sounds or bass not a range of different sounds/pitches like speakers. get some alpine or pioneer speakers they're good and not expensive. as for the radio its cheaper to put it in yourself you just need the wiring harness(match up the colors on the wires) that you can buy at best buy or you can pay to have it put in.
lee @ 2009-06-24 09:50:42

by putting a sub in direct place of the speakers ( if you make them fit somehow) you will gain nothing, it will sound pretty much the same, but more muted because the bigger sub cannot make high frequencies as easily... best off to go with an aftermarket speaker set of the same size as original
jacob f @ 2009-06-24 09:52:31

Yes but you cant use them as speakers, so long as you have speakers too that would be fine.

subs just generate heavy bass

You're probably gonna need an amp (amplifier) though to generate enough power to notice any benifit from the subs

[All Answers]
it will work.
shady @ 2009-06-24 09:15:26

Slightly higher then ideal (usually don't want to exceed by more then 10%).

Should be ok - just go easy on high volume levels for extended periods of time. Obviously, full blast for extended periods of time will be the recipe to blowing the sub.
RPM @ 2009-06-24 09:19:42

It will be fine as long as you do not exceed the sub's capability. Turning the gain of the amp up or down has no effect on how loud the amplifier can play but rather how loud it will play at a certain volume level on the source unit. Your gain control on the amplifier controls the strength of your signal from the source unit. With the gain up too far it will sound louder at lower levels but then will level off and become distorted at higher levels. When you magnify the signal you are also magnifying everything within it like total harmonic distortion THD. That is usually what kills subs.

Think of it like using a magnifying glass on a picture or painting. A reasonable strength will give you a good magnified look but over magnify it and it starts to get grainy and distorted..........same concept.

It is usually best to have a little more amp than sub in my opinion. If the amp has to max out to the point of clipping to reach the subs full potential you are putting both the amp and sub at risk. Don't keep the thing at max levels for too long.....the voice coils need time to cool too, and the right enclosure makes a huge difference.

im sorry for you being robbed but no there isnt. The speaker wire all run through your car to the Headunit (stereo) and come together into that. Without the headunit its just bare naked wires. ALso the head unit is the power supply to allow your speakers to function.
slipknotfreak @ 2009-06-23 10:19:01

Your amp has RCA inputs. Get yourself a male RCA to 3.5mm headphone adapter. You might want a line level booster as well, not necessary.

I cant think of anyway. But if you found away it may cost more then just buying a new Cd player.

Ported subwoofer box or sealed.?

I have 2 jl audio w3 v2 subwoofers but im not actually sure what kind of box i need to get..i have never heard any jl audio subs in a ported box..so i need some input..!!!
marcusterry2000 @ 2009-06-23 10:10:25

[All Answers]
Either way is fine! JL makes their own ported subwoofer boxes, look at the website. They sound great. Typically ported boxes will be LOUDER. They must be built and tuned correctly. One advantage of a sealed box is that it is usually smaller than a ported box for a given sub. Either way--- with enough power and correct box, those subs will be very loud and sound pretty good.

Look at JL's website and look at the box recommendations. Its a myth that "ported boxes are sloppier and dont sound as good". Some of the most expensive, accurate ultra high end home stereos and studio equipment have ported woofers.
odinsragess @ 2009-06-23 10:18:40

i have 2 13w7. i had them in a sealed bx before but went with ported after a few and it actually made a lot of difference. the bass hits harder now. difference because now the air actually comes out the box. so ported all the way
Kato S @ 2009-06-23 10:19:15

Well, first of all, what kind of music do you listen to the most. If it's country, rock, metal, etc. then you'll be better off with a sealed for the tight bass response. However if you're normally listening to hip hop and rap then you'd like the ported better because of the ability to get lower louder than a sealed enclosure. If SPL is your main goal then a ported enclosure with all 4 subs sharing the same air space will be loudest. If you want loud but with decent SQ then you'll want to build the enclosure with seperate ported spaces for each subwoofer. I can recommend and even draw up all kinds of enclosure idea's, however it comes down to what your listening preferences and goals of the system are to decide what you end up with.
bob d @ 2009-06-23 10:20:42

I have 2 Kicker 15's in my car. I have had them for many years and started with them in a sealed box since i had no clue how to make a ported box and tune it properly. After highschool a friend taught me how to make a ported box and i used that instead. With the ported i got harder hitting bass that sounded much better with rap music. The sealed box provided a tighter sound to the subs for more of fast double bass rock music. It truly depends on what music you will be playing and your personal sound preference. If you do choose to make a sealed box i would highly recommend "stuffing" it with baffling as it will make the tone a little lower and hit harder.

You can do it without worry of damaging you car's electrical system. You will not get great sound. Subs require more power than the full range speakers your car came with. The mounting location will also determine the quality of sound.
