Installing a cb radio?

Question 1
Installing a cb radio?...  Hey i'm just wondering how would you install a cb radio I know about the fuse box trick but my fuse box is right. to the right off my batt lol.... so the what i did just for a test is i took the two ends and put them in the power out let white on the edge and the black in the middle and yea power it works but now i'm wondering is there something that i can buy to hook up the wires to so i can plug it in when im using it and unplug it when im not to the power out let??

1)   most cars and trucks have a 12 volt outlet (looks just like the cigarette lighter on older cars without the lighter) you can get an adapter at wal-mart that attaches to your positive and negative leads from cb. that with a magnectic antenna allows you to pop it in and out in no time. - befr3

2)   if you have a working cigarette lighter plug you can go to wal mart, in the automotive section, or to any auto part store and get a 12 volt accessory plug. it will look like a standard cigarette lighter plugin for a car charger, etc, except for the fact that it will have two wires sticking out of the end of it. one will be a ground and one will be a hot wire. the box will tell you which wire is which depending on which wire has a tracer color on it. you will connect the power wire on your cb radio to the power wire on the accessory plug and the ground will go to the ground the same way. now you can just plug your accessory plug into your cigarette lighter to power your cb radio. it works great and is very very easy to do. i have had the cb in my truck set up this way for 7 years now and it works great. hope this helps. - offroadjunkie

4)   Auto parts stores sell 12 volt cigarette lighter plugs that you can wire into the radio wires. A stock CB draws less about 1/3 amp, so they should be fused for 1 amp and no more. The average cigarette lighter has a 10, or 15 amp fuse, so the radio could fry before the fuse blew. Find a plug that has a built in fuse and use a 1 amp fuse in it. Then you just plug it in when needed.



You can also use a power cord that has a built in fuse holder. (Most CB's came with power cords that had them) Then it's just a matter of connecting to ground (- is supposed to be the black wire) and the ignition switch "ON" or "run"position wire. (+ is usually a red wire, although I have seen a few use white.) (everything except British cars that require special radio hook ups because they use + for ground and - for power.) - dallenmarket

Question 2
I am going to run FOUR 18" Fi BTL's, what amps should i use?...  Four Fi BTL's in my expedition behind second row. Either a wall or a box. Im thinking wall. I want to run about 2500-4000 watts per sub. Perfering 3000-4000ish. I was looking into the Sundown SAZ-3500D and also the Rockford Fosgate 400001. Any suggestions? I will be upgrading my electrical, as in new high output alt, several batt's, Big-3 upgrade. I want to hit high numbers on the TL. =]. Also i dont want to spend like 1500 per amp. I think thats the most ill pay per amp unless the amp gives out a true like 8k watts or somehting crazy. Thanks for the help,.

3)   So is this going to be a strict competiton setup or do you want to have a daily driver that you can compete very well? If you let us know exactly what you are looking for from this setup we can help you a little more in-depth.



The BTLs can handle a ton of power but 3000-4000 watts is too much for anything other then a short burp. Some people may say their sub has handled that much but it is typically only in a competition or for a short burp. Running that much power to a sub while listening to music is going to blow it.



You will need more then one high output alternator for running that much power. A bank of batteries is good for competing but if you are listening to this while your truck is running you will need a lot of power from your alternators.



The enclosure you are going to need is going to be huge so a wall is probably the only way to go. To get the most output you should be on the higher end of what FI recommend which is around 9-10 cubic foot per sub. The enclosure is going to need to be braced extremely well. Doing some more things such as adding a few layers of MDF or using fiberglass resin on the inside would be a good idea.



If you plan on doing this yourself (meaning not having a shop do it) then I would recommend looking at some other vehicles like this. One that comes to mind is Steve Meade. Looking at those vehicles will give you an idea of what you need to do for setting up a system like this.



Sundown makes good amps, I would recommend it over RF.

Question about car audio concerning subwoofers?...  I am going to install subwoofers in my trunk. How many should I get? What kind of amp and how many should I get? I am going to be listening to rap music with this. I am trying to get these things to thump. I mean I really want to ruin my reputation in my neighborhood. Help me out please.

1)   I would reccomend 4 my grandmaw listens to rap music and she has 4 in the back of her red jeep. Also i would reccomend replacing all the glass windows in the car with plexiglass because it can cause regular glass to shatter. My grandma had her stero system about 2 days and all of her windows shattered and she replaced them with plexiglass and now has no problem with glass breaking anymore.

2)   What is your budget?



I would look at other places then Crutchfield for subs. I would look into FI Car Audio to start with. There are many other good sub manufacturers out there but what would be ideal depends on your budget. FI makes good subs that will give you the output you are looking for.

How many subs you should get depends on your budget. If you are on a fairly tight budget I would recommend getting one good sub. Everytime you double the cone area you gain 3db so having two subs over one is not usually a big difference. Also, every time you double the power you gain 3db. Those are theoretical values so the actual gain is less.



That is not a huge gain in loudness so it may not be worth it to have multiple subs. I would recommend getting one good sub over two decent ones.



The amp you should get depends on what sub(s) you choose. So choose a sub then look for an amp. That is typically a good way to choose your system.

3)   Alright here is the layout of my system, I've gotten two tickets for it by the way. I have two 12" kicker comps 300 RMS 4ohm. They are bridged on a 1200 watt Power Acoustik Gothic Series amp attached to a 3 farad capacitor. One cop told me he could here me blocks away and another said I rattled his windows. I've actually even set off a car alarm of someone parked next to me. I paid about 1000 dollars for the system years ago so you should be able to pick it up a bit cheaper now. - Raptor

Dc outlet doesnt work on my truck, i've replaced the fuse cuz it was burnt but it doesnt work plz help?...  I have a ford e250 extended van. I have 2 dc outlets...one cigarette lighter other one dc outlet... i've checked ALL the fuses i found one that says 10 on it and it was burnt, i replaced it and all the other fuses are fine. But it still doesnt work! I have a GPS and a backup camera which i use to plug it in. I barely use these dc outlets idk what happened plz help?

1)   Could be any number of things from corrosion in the outlet not allowing a good contact to a bad or disconnected wire for power or ground. Some of the outlets use contact of their metal edge to metal in the vehicle for ground. (Where the inner metal cylinder of the outlet screws into the metal ring in the console, dash, etc.) These can loosen and lose contact or corrode quite easily. - dallenmarket

2)   Theres probably more than one fuse box, most fords have one inside and one uder the hood check them both, for the cigarette lighter the fuse is going to be one 15 amps or more. - Rob

3)   some times there is a button you have to press to turn the outlet on. in my tundra, i have press the button A/C outlet or the outlets wont send power out to whatever is plugged in - Reed O
