How much should the Ohm of my subwoofer be?

Question 1
How much should the Ohm of my subwoofer be?...  I am looking at getting a new sub becuase my old one blew. I had an Alpine Type-R 12" but I guess my Alpine MRP-M850 amp blew it.



Anyways I am looking at getting something with more RMS. The Kicker CVX 12" seems like it will do good since it pushes 750RMS and my amp pushes 850RMS at 2ohms.



My question is if I buy this sub and my amp is wired at 2ohms what ohm do I need to get my sub at, 2 or 4? so it will push the full 850RMS of my amp. Sorry if that is all confusing.



Also for those of you who want to do the research I have a Q-Logic box that measures 16 1/8 in. Wide by 14 3/8 in. high, 16 1/2 in BD and 11 1/2 inch TD. The enlcosure totals 1.25Cubic Feet. Will this sub fit inside this box?

1)   i would go with 2 ohms because it seems like your amp is no more than 850 watts. this means your speaker will be stronger than your amp so you should not have any problems with blowing your sub.you should be happy with the both of them - ?

2)   In all forms of electricity, the maximum (efficient) power transmission comes from all matched components. If the speakers are 2 ohm, then the amp should be 2 ohms, the wire 2 ohms, etc.



As a side note, some manufacturers measure the ohms in *impedance*.

This means the ohms are measured with music, and is different from a battery powered volt/ohm meter. So, make sure the ohms listed are the same type. - Vic J

Question 2
switching the ohms on a subwoofer!!!?...  i bought two ten inch jl audio w3v2 subs and they have the two sets of prongs on each one....how do i use both and doesnt that change the ohms?? i think each sub is a four ohm but can be switched to two??....not sure though.. i need somebody who knows what they are talking about and will for sure tell me what i need to know about these. Right now i have a kicker 300zx mono ch. amp pushing the pair, i know its not a great setup but im trying to just get a little more power out of them and dont really know how.. PLEASE HELP ME!!! any feedback helps...:)

1)   run just one prong off of each one and hook it up positive to positive and negative to negative then run one positive and one negative to the amp.that amp i not that powerful to push those speakers to it full potential so until u get a more powerful amp (preferably 1200watts rms) run it like that. - evol

2)   you have to know what your amp can play..1omh, 2 ohm, 4 ohm.. also you didn't say if your subs are dual 4ohm or dual 2ohm..?

Question 3
Installing 2 amplifiers?...  Ok so i finally got the components i want for my setup, which consist of upgraded door speakers with a 2-channel amp to power them, 2 subs that i am going to dual bridge with a mono amp and finally a good head unit with 4 rca preouts (front + rear). I have looked at many wiring diagram's and kinda get the hang of how to set this up but will there be any thing else i need? e.g capacitor,power block, ground block etc. thanks :)

1)   if you don't have these first i would do 4 gauge power and ground wires. next, get two distribution blocks. one for power and one for ground this way you can split power and ground for your amps.if your amps power add up to more than 1000 watts i would definitely get a capacitor and a yellow top battery. if not, the yellow top battery should do just fine. - evol

Question 4
what is the adapter i need to hook up subs called?...  its in the back of the stock jbl stereo in a 09 corolla, i was told it was called a preamp jack and i cant find anything called that, any help?

Question 5
Will a 600 W amp power 2 12 inch terminators?...  the subs are 4 ohms, and they are MTX Terminators...i don't really know what kinda wattage to get for an amp

1)   You'll be good with a 600w amp. I think they're rated at 400w RMS for a pair, so 600w shouldn't be too much if you keep the gain set at a reasonable level. - Erik
